AS members of the Over 55s Gardening Club we are appalled at the proposed closure of Unity Garden to provide extra-care housing.
Although we appreciate the need for such premises we feel this site is well-established as a community garden and proving very popular and a successful venture for all ages, for instance: mentally handicapped, families with toddlers, disabled adults, work experience for the unemployed.
The benefits to the community include fresh vegetables to buy, gardening activities and training. The restaurant is very popular and many people enjoy the meals.
The proposed new venue (Widemarsh Workshops) is not a suitable alternative as 98% of those who use the garden are from the local area of Aylestone, Tupsley and St James.
Unity Garden is not suitable for the development because it's a green field site and a flood plain; not near the hospital because of the railway line and it will not relieve bed blocking, as a high percentage will be residential dwellings.
