Life and work of Sisley detailed by specialist

From the archive, first published Thursday 2nd Oct 2003.

The first lecture in the coming season for The National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies, being given by Nicholas Reed BA (Oxon) MA Mphil, is entitled `The Impressionist Sisley in England and Wales'.

Alfred Sisley (1839-99), the only Englishman among the French Impressionists, produced two series of paintings in Britain. The second being towards the end of his life included over 20 paintings of scenes in South Wales, around Penarth and along the Gower Peninsula.

A series of letters survives describing his Welsh stay in considerable detail.

Nicholas Reed is the author of five books on the impressionists in Britain and specialises in comparing artists' views with modern views of the same scene.

The lecture is being held at Brecon's Theatr Brycheiniog at 2.30pm on Tuesday. Visitors welcome.
