Barefaced cheek

From the archive, first published Thursday 2nd Oct 2003.

`MusicaL performer with building site experience' read the advert in The Stage when the quirky new musical Cheek was being cast this summer.

All those `resting' performers making ends meet on building sites around the country probably couldn't believe their luck!

The brainchild of engineer Ian Luther, Cheek the musical is touring the UK, following a warm reception at Edinburgh and some early `taster' performances in South Wales.

The cast, which consists of former bricklayers, labourers, carpenters, landscape gardeners, foremen and electricians includes a world champion bagpipe player, an award-winning tenor and a rock musician.

Cheek depicts one whacky day on the site with an imaginative cocktail of music, slapstick comedy and crazy dances.

Often when the lads are in town they take to the streets to give a sneak preview of Builders Bum - the single from the show which Ian and his mates released in 1999 to huge media interest. Banned from Cwmbran shopping centre, despite the protests of onlookers, Ian says:

"We probably won't be doing anything like that in Hereford because it's a Sunday!"

"It's not all bums and whistles though".

Liking it to humour in the Carry On vein, the builders are sponsored, appropriately, by Gloucester-based company Toilet Hire (UK).You've got to laugh.

Book to see the lads this Sunday at The Courtyard on 01432 359252.
